English Course Levels

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) can be used to describe achievements of learners of English. The levels are represented in the table below:

A1

Beginner

  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people they know and things they have.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A2

Elementary

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Can describe in simple terms aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Independent

B1

Intermediate

  • Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • Can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest.
  • Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

B2

Upper Intermediate

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialization.
  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Proficient

C1

Advanced

  • Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer clauses, and recognize implicit meaning.
  • Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.
  • Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
  • Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

C2

Proficiency

  • Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read.
  • Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
  • Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

This course is great for students who want to learn English for the first time. Lessons are fun, interesting, and we try to use what you know to help you learn faster.

This is what you will learn:

  • How to introduce yourself and greet others.
  • How to share personal information.
  • How to ask for things.
  • New vocabulary on topics such as jobs, sport, food, clothes and furniture.
  • Useful grammar, including the present and past simple, prepositions, possessive adjectives.
  • How to pronounce words clearly.
  • How to ask for clarification.
  • Listen to understand.
  • Make conversation with others.
  • Use everyday English in different situations.
  • Learn how to use the alphabet and its sounds.
  • Make simple sentences.
  • Use basic punctuation.
  • Spell common words.

This Elementary English course is good for students who have a basic knowledge of English. If you have some vocabulary and can make easy sentences, the Elementary English course can give you more structure and practice.

WISE can help you build your confidence. With different exercises, techniques and teaching styles, you will improve your command of the English language.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to greet each other politely.
  • How to order coffee, make a hotel reservation, buy clothes.
  • How to make requests, ask for permission and ask for action.
  • How to ask for directions.
  • How to describe people.
  • How to listen and respond when someone is speaking to you.
  • How to listen for important information.
  • How to recognise feelings and attitudes.
  • Vocabulary (shopping, education, music, the family, holidays and adventures).
  • Grammar, including adverbs of frequency, quantifiers, comparative adjectives.
  • Completing a form
  • Writing a letter.

The WISE Pre-Intermediate English course takes Elementary English speakers to the next level. You will feel more comfortable with conversations, listening for meaning, and making more difficult sentences.

Pre-intermediate English courses focus more on grammar and structure, so that you can use the language correctly and clearly. You will also learn many new words and improve your pronunciation.

What You Will Learn:

  • Develop your conversations – be more confident
  • Describe countries
  • Ask for and give directions
  • Practical English – in airports, hotels and restaurants; at the doctor’s
  • Use stress and intonation effectively
  • Request information and give instructions.
  • Express facts, give explanations, take part in more formal interaction.
  • Understand the main points when listening to presentations.
  • Listen for important information in short narratives and explanations.
  • Lots of new collocations, adverbs, adjectives, verbs.
  • Grammar (including present perfect simple, continuous tenses, modals and conditionals).
  • Decode words using context and both phonic and graphic knowledge.
  • Get information from illustrations, maps, diagrams and captions.
  • Give verbal feedback, write book and film reviews, emails and informal letters.
  • Use a dictionary to find meanings of words.
  • Use punctuation and capitalisation.
  • Improve your spelling
  • Construct simple and complex sentences using conjunctions, such as ‘and’ and ‘but’.

At the Intermediate level, we focus on helping you to maintain conversations on a variety of familiar topics comfortably. Your listening skills will improve and you will be more aware of grammatical structures.

This level will help increase your knowledge on what you have already learnt at lower levels.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to make suggestions, offers and polite requests, express opinions, agree and disagree
  • When to use ‘must’ and ‘have to’
  • How to book a flight, show interest, make social arrangements
  • Ask more difficult questions
  • Understand and make jokes
  • Talk about the future and make predictions
  • How to use your voice, stress and intonation to make your meaning clear
  • Listen for specific information in different contexts on radio, TV, lectures or speaking with someone
  • Use formal and informal English in appropriate settings, including over the phone.
  • Vocabulary on topics such as leisure, art, work, life events, literature, society and the weather.
  • How to read and find the main points and ideas, and predict words from context.
  • How to use existing knowledge of grammar and word order to work out meaning and confirm understanding.
  • Learn to improve reading and understand unfamiliar words.

At the Upper-Intermediate level, we teach you how to communicate beyond your immediate survival needs. You will learn how to start and continue conversations with relative ease.

You will build on your grammar knowledge and vocabulary. The course will focus on understanding details, more complex language, and longer interactions.

What You Will Learn:

  • Making conversation, responding sympathetically, and giving advice and suggestions.
  • How to deal with unexpected and awkward situations face-to-face and problems on the telephone.
  • How to give and report opinions.
  • Articulating the sounds of English clearly in connected natural speech.
  • How to take part in more formal interactions.
  • How to listen for grammatical or phonological detail.
  • How to use strategies to clarify and confirm understanding.
  • How to provide feedback and confirmation to others.
  • How to understand and identify the different ways in which meaning is built up in texts.
  • How to understand how main points and specific detail are presented and linked.
  • How to use skimming, scanning and detailed reading in different ways for different purposes.
  • How to use implicit and explicit grammatical knowledge, together with prior experiential knowledge, to predict meaning, try out possible meanings and read and check for sense.
  • How to develop an increasing understanding of a range of vocabulary, using knowledge of word structure, related words, word roots and borrowings.
  • How to structure texts sequentially and coherently.
  • How to choose language suitable for purpose and audience.
  • How to select format and appropriate structure for different purposes.
  • How to write using complex sentences.

How to use sentence grammar accurately to achieve purpose.

Our Advanced English course is for those students who are comfortable with the English language. You would already be familiar with all the tenses, have a wide vocabulary, and are confident with speaking and writing.

The Advanced English course develops critical thinking skills, so that you can use the English language more effectively.

We develop your fluency through simulations, real-life practice, and more challenging exercises. This course can be useful for students who wish to study at university, do business, or want to be more proficient in the English language for a variety of reasons.

Some of the things you will learn:

  • Discuss current issues at length such as globalisation, humour, behaviour and lifestyle, health, education, gender and age differences, relationships, success, business and finance, trends in science.
  • Make decisions, give instructions, argue a point of view, come to a decision.
  • Give presentations and tell an interesting story.
  • Understand varieties of accent and different forms of English.
  • Use different strategies to perform reading tasks for examinations and tests.
  • Produce a report, write a news article and effective formal and less formal e-mails.
  • Write essays expressing a point of view and describing cause and effect.
  • Use collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms and expressions for everyday life situations.

The Warnborough Intensive School of English (WISE) has been teaching English using our own unique and independent system since 1973. We are a small college based in the historic university city of Canterbury, less than 55 minutes from central London.
